Radon Awareness

I’m going to be serious here for a moment. January is National Radon Action Month. Maybe you’ve heard of radon and maybe you haven’t. Radon is a natural radioactive gas that may be present at high levels in your home. It doesn’t have any odor or taste and is the SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF LUNG CANCER in America. The good news is you can easily test your home for radon and, if necessary, have your home mitigated to protect your health.  There are companies that will test the radon levels for you, or you can purchase testing kits that you place in the living area of your home for a certain period of time. There are short term and long term tests and it’s important to note that radon levels fluctuate throughout the year.  If a short term test shows higher than normal levels of radon, a long term test will often be recommended before action is taken to lower the gas levels in the home. I highly encourage you to take a moment to read more about radon on the websites below and take the steps needed to protect your health and your family.

Atomic Ranch is one of my very very favorite magazines. They publish quarterly and feature amazing midcentury ranches and modernist tract homes. Each issue is bursting with eye candy and I constantly find myself ooooh-ing and aaaah-ing over each page (even pages of ads!)

Did you know they also have a coffee table book? If you have Atomic Ranch withdrawals in between each new issue, definitely check out the book. It features almost 20 midcentury houses. That cover photo makes me swoon. And if the regular issues and book aren’t enough for you, they have older issues available on their website. The site also has a lot of great links to other midcentury modern delights. Enjoy the midcentury marvels!

Portland Real Estate Market Update – December 2007 and Year-End

The latest RMLS market action report came out today. The year finished off with a continued decrease in the number of closed and pending sales, but sales price continued to rise. The number of closed sales was down 29.4% compared to this time last year.  The number of new listings also dropped for the third month in a row. At the current rate of sales, it would take approximately 8.5 months to absorb all of the active residential listings. The average home sales price in Portland this December was $352,000 and the median price was $276,500.  The average sales price during the 2007 year was $342,900 and the median price was $290,000. Both of those numbers are a $20,000 increase over the 2006 averages.*

I’ve noticed an increase in activity lately…people seem to be coming out of their post-holiday haze.  The statistics still support that this is a good time to buy. If you’re thinking about buying a house or condo in 2008, give me a call!

Portland Spaces Unveiling and Launch Party

The Portland Spaces launch party on Thursday night was out in a big warehouse in the industrial area of NW Portland. We arrived around 7:30 and the place was packed! The floor was covered in sod and the decor was like a summer garden party, an interesting juxtaposition to the cement walls and exposed beams.  The sod made the air very humid, but being a native Oregonian, I much prefer that to dry air.  It gave us a chance to feel transported to another place in a warmer season and escape the cold rain for a while. We eventually succeeded at making our way through the crowd and over to the bar for some deliciously refreshing blood orange drops.  And after a while of wandering around, we started running into friends and acquaintances.  That’s one thing I love about Portland — in a room full of strangers at any given event you’re bound to come across a friend or two.  There were some speeches and the unveiling of the magazine cover (shown above).  We each got a copy of the magazine, which I promptly started reading upon my return home.  It was a fun evening!  I look forward to seeing future issues of the magazine, as well as the website, which is set to launch on Monday.

Emily Martin is the amazing artist behind the sensational etsy shop, The Black Apple. Her shop is stocked full of fantastic prints like Little HouseGirl (above right) and she recently came out with some house printed tea towels (above left)! (At the moment, the tea towels appear to be sold out…things at The Black Apple sell like hotcakes, but hopefully she’ll have more soon! Sorry for the tease.)  Be sure to check out her shop and her great blog
