Portland is brimming with talented artists and one of my favorites is Jill Bliss. Since moving to Portland, she has fallen in love with the beautiful houses and architecture and is paying tribute to them through her artwork. Jill is well known for her drawings of plant life and nature and I love seeing how her colorful textured style is adapted to architectural structures. You can shop her available prints, originals and more on her website and etsy shop (be sure to visit both as some different items are offered on each!). Check out her flickr to see lots of other amazing work she’s done – and don’t miss the photos of her Colors of Nature show at Together Gallery…tree houses!

While on an errand last week I finally stumbled upon elsa + sam, a fabulous dishware boutique on SE Hawthorne. I’ve always intended to check it out, but was afraid of my willpower…you see, I’m such a dishware lover that I’ve been cut off from bringing home any more dishes! Imagine my delight at discovering the Neighborhood series by Dovetail Shop & Studio, a duo of ceramic artists in Colorado. (I may have to sneak a purchase of that mug – maybe I could just use it in the office.)   I just love the hand drawn buildings and the contrast of the black on shiny white. Anyway, while I may not be allowed to stock my cupboards with all of the fantastic creations at elsa + sam, I will most certainly keep them in mind the next time I’m shopping for a gift!

I Love…Mudpuppy! [because birds need houses too]

mudpuppy

Look at the beauty of this handmade ceramic birdhouse! I love that it’s in the shape of a mushroom, but is sleek and modern. Imagine it dangling next to your favorite outdoor sitting spot. Pretty little birdies would fly over and perch on the stick while you sip your mint julep and contemplate the world.

Mudpuppy also creates stunning housewares and tiny things for terrariums. Be sure to visit their etsy shop to see all the goodness!

I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge fan of cute atomic midcentury apartment buildings. I also love California Modern style, which is why I’m so taken with 33stewartavenue’s series of prints called Apartments. He takes photos of cool apartment buildings in his home town of Los Angeles and digitally alters them to make vibrant art prints. You can purchase them individually or as a set! He has a nice website to showcase his work in addition to his etsy shop!

I have fallen in love with Dozi Design! She makes original paper goods with delicious colors and clean crisp designs. Check out her pocket jotters – hand-bound little notebooks perfect for slipping in your purse. As a perpetual list maker, I always love a good blank book! She also has fantastic notecards and house gift tags! Visit her shop here.

Okay, so I have to admit, since I’m having a baby I’m especially tuned into baby things! But you must agree that this midcentury modern ranch onesie from Tiny Modernist is the coolest thing ever! You can choose the color and size of your onesie and they will lovingly add the handmade felt applique. They also offer kids tees and onesies featuring modern furniture, an array of cute little mod dresses, and modern furniture cross stitch patterns…perfect for that little modernist in your life!

I Love…Lucy Bird Photography!

Today’s spotlight is Lucy Bird Photography. She has all kinds of gorgeous photos, but of course we’re going to focus on the architectural ones. What I love about Lucy’s photos is the way she captures color. Everything is so rich…and she doesn’t do any digital altering! As you can see, I’m especially entranced by the ones that have an eery quality to them. If that’s not your thing, she’s got lots of cheerier photos (like cute garden gnomes!). Check out her etsy shop and the blog she and her husband write together.

I Love…Please Be Still!

As a girl whose heart goes all a flutter for midcentury modern design, you can imagine my delight at finding these beautiful prints by Please Be Still on etsy! The Red Door print from her Between These Walls series (shown above) is my favorite, with its delicious color palette and line drawn modern houses in the background.

If you’re a modern furniture junkie, check out her Modern Design Deck prints featuring the 20th century’s most notable designers. When I lived in France I had a whole class on Le Corbusier, so I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for his designs.

In addition to her shop, be sure to visit her blog, 365, where she posts a new image of her fantastic artwork every single day.
